The value types a search field can return, and their formats

Every search field has a type. The type tells Hoppa what kind of value to look for, and Hoppa converts what it finds into a standard format. To add search fields, see Define search fields.

If Hoppa cannot find a value, or cannot convert what it found into the type's format, the result is left empty.

General

Free text, worded as it appears in the document. There are no format rules.

Use it for names, references, titles and descriptions.

Number

A single number.

  • No units, currency symbols, percentage signs or thousands separators.
  • A full stop as the decimal separator.
  • A leading minus sign for negative values.

Examples: 5000, 12.5, -3

Currency

A monetary amount with its currency.

  • The currency symbol or three-letter ISO code is kept as it appears in the document.
  • A symbol sits directly before the amount. A code is followed by a single space.
  • The amount always has two decimal places and no thousands separators.

Examples: £5000.00, $12.50, USD 5000.00

Date

A single date in ISO format, as complete as the document allows.

What the document gives Result Example
Day, month and year YYYY-MM-DD 2024-01-15
Month and year YYYY-MM 2024-01
Year only YYYY 2024
Day and month, no year DD-MMM 15-Jan

Hoppa understands dates written in many styles, including month names, ordinals such as 16th, and numeric dates. Two-digit years are expanded: 00 to 49 become 2000 to 2049, and 50 to 99 become 1950 to 1999.

Date Range

Two dates joined by the word to. Each date follows the same rules as the Date type.

Examples: 2024-01-15 to 2024-02-28, 2024-01 to 2024-06

Percentage

A percentage, returned as a plain number without the % sign. It follows the same rules as the Number type.

Example: 12.5 for 12.5%

Boolean

A yes or no answer, returned as true or false.

Validation

Hoppa checks each value against its field's type. Values that do not match are counted as Invalid in the results, so you can find and correct them. See Analysis and certainty.
